The Debian package auctex
-------------------------

Autoloading
===========

AUCTeX gets auto-loaded by default. If you do not want AUCTeX to override
some of the original Emacs TeX related modes, you might want to customize the
TeX-modes variable. You may also unload AUCTeX by evaluating the form
"(unload-feature 'tex-site)" (i.e., put that string into your "~/.emacs" to
completely disable AUCTeX, as if it was never loaded).

RefTeX
======

AUCTeX users will probably want to switch the very useful RefTeX package on,
by adding something like "(add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook 'turn-on-reftex)" to
their "~/.emacs" (see the RefTeX info manual for more information on RefTeX,
which is part of GNU Emacs).

Font-LaTeX
==========

Starting with AUCTeX 11.01, a new user customizable variable appeared:
"TeX-install-font-lock". Font-LaTeX it's now the default choice, so users
need not doing anything special to load it anymore. Emacs 21 users may choose
"tex-font" instead, should they wish it.

Using dvipng with preview-latex
===============================

Since Debian version 11.86-9, preview-latex will use dvipng by default if
installed. Users wishing to switch back to Dvips plus Ghostscript might want
to customize the variable preview-image-type.
Read /usr/share/doc/auctex/README.gz for more information.

Reverse search: using source specials rather than SyncTeX
=========================================================

When TeX-Source-Correlate mode is enabled, to allow viewers to do reverse
search AUCTeX uses SyncTeX by default, rather than source specials, if the
underlying TeX system supports it (as it does with TeX Live on Debian).
However, xdvik currently supports only source specials, resulting in missing
reverse search functionality and the warning "No source specials in this DVI
file - couldn't do reverse search". Users wishing to let AUCTeX use source
specials instead of SyncTeX might want to customize the variable
TeX-source-correlate-method.

On line Documentation
=====================

On line documentation may be found in the info or HTML manual, and in the
update-auctex-elisp(8) manual page.

TeXInfo sources may be found in the "/usr/share/doc/auctex/src" directory.

Notes to System Administrators
==============================

A) To improve its performance AUCTeX stores information about TeX macros and
LaTeX styles available on the system in the "/var/lib/auctex" directory.

AUCTeX updates this information automatically, via dpkg triggers;
nevertheless, you may want to run "update-auctex-elisp" manually after
installing new style files under "/usr/local/share/texmf".

B) You may probably want to customize the list of printers available at your
site. This could be easily accomplished by declaring it in
"/etc/emacs/site-start.el" (along with the default printer), for example:

(setq TeX-printer-list
      '(("lp" "dvips -f %s | lpr -P %p" "lpq -P %p")
        ("lpc" "dvips -f %s | lpr -P %p" "lpq -P %p")
        ("lpf" "dvips -f %s | lpr -P %p" "lpq -P %p")
        ("lpt" "dvips -f %s | lpr -P %p" "lpq -P %p"))
      TeX-printer-default "lpf")

Please, look at the on line documentation, type `C-h v TeX-printer-list RET'
from within Emacs (load AUCTeX first), or browse through the file
"/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/auctex/tex.el" for more information on this topic.

Contributed Files
=================

There is a file that is not part of AUCTeX proper, but is included in the
distribution in case it proves useful:

    - `bib-cite.el': better support for bibliographies and much more;

Read the comments at the start of that file for more information about how to
load it, what does it do, and who wrote and maintains it.
